Are mice in your car, truck or camper a problem? If not, consider yourself lucky as millions of vehicles are affected by this problem yearly. But why? We’ll answer that question and attempt to give you a solution.
Mice are drawn by the heat and stay for the food
You may not know, but many car wires and the insulation they’re made with contain soy, peanut oil, rice husks and various other plant based materials. To further complicate matters a warm car makes a sweet vanilla odor which smells like an easy meal to a rodent. Once inside mice in your care chew on these wires and then use leaves and fibrous material to build nests. All of this can turn out to be an expensive proposition to correct for vehicle owners.
What works and what doesn’t to keep mice out of your car
Mice in your car is a fairly popular search query on Google. There are many solutions from dryer sheets to electronic zappers and wires that are made to taste spicy. On more than one occasion I’m sure that each one of these products and solutions has worked. The problem is that they don’t work every time and with the exception of changing the wires they need to be repeated frequently.
What works the best
So, what is the solution? Without a doubt the best solution is to keep mice out in the first place. This can be done in two different ways:
- Performing an exclusion on the building that the vehicle is stored in
- Installing a physical barrier around the vehicle that prevents rodent entry (this is possible)
Let’s briefly look at each solution. The most obvious place to park a vehicle inside is in the garage. The most obvious place mice get into the garage is the garage door. You’ll need to make sure the following items are in good repair:
- Weather stripping (especially at the corners)
- The frame is straight and the garage closes as it should
- The floor is level so the weather seal forms a tight fit
Those three maintenance items alone may solve your problem if you park in a garage. However, in some situations these items are not able to be completed. What then? I read an interesting article that can shed some light on the subject. The scientist in the article appears to have a better mousetrap. However, even this solution takes up space and can be difficult to use on a day to day basis.
