Squirrels in the attic? What’s next?

Squirrels in the attic? More often than not diagnosing this problem is relatively easy for the average homeowner.  What’s not easy is knowing which type of squirrel you may have and believe me it makes a big difference in both price and the method of removal.

In CT the two squirrels we most often provide service and damage repair for are the southern flying squirrel and the grey squirrel.  They both can be equally destructive.

The first step to finding out more about your problem is to have an inspection.  The inspector will likely ask a few questions such as:

1. At what time of day or night do you hear the noise?

The grey squirrel is typically very active from sunup to sundown while the flying squirrel will be heard mainly at night.  Is there another pest active in the dead of night that is easily mistaken for flying squirrels ?

2. Where or what part of the home is the noise coming from?

A good squirrel inspector is going to inspect both the interior and the exterior of your home.  As the homeowner you can help this inspection by knowing where the noises you’re hearing may be coming from.  The reason this is important is that flyers only need 1.25″ to get into an attic.  They typically enter the same areas in every in every home, but knowing where they may be helps.

A grey squirrel is far less clever, they’ll just chew into the roof line to gain access.  The evidence they leave behind is more often than not obvious to both the inspector and the homeowner

What damage can squirrels in the attic cause?

When squirrels are in the attic they damage wires, insulation and can damage equipment or storage.  The flying squirrel is particularly harmful as they have the bad habit of urinating and defecating in the same areas.  This most often leads to a cleanup and insulation replacement bill.

Squirrel control especially for flying squirrels is a job for someone who knows what they’re doing.  Very often the well meaning homeowner trying to get rid of their own problem inadvertently makes it worse.
