How To Kill Carpenter Ants

I often asked how to kill carpenter ants.  This is going to come as a surprise, but learning how to kill carpenter ants is actually quite easy.  The problem is finding them.

For instance, over the past 20 years I’ve found carpenter ant colonies in hollow wood doors, shower rods, vases, empty kitchen cabinets and the oddest place; the frame of a couch.

Carpenter ants sometimes give clues as to where they’re hiding.  The clue can be as simple as a foraging trail and as destructive as what some people call “ant droppings”.  These droppings are actually frass, within frass you’ll find sawdust, dead insects etc. Essentially, frass is the garbage of the nest.

Where to look for carpenter ants:panel_season_ants

  • Wet wood
  • Door frames
  • Window frames
  • Garage frame tops
  • Where decks attach to a home
  • In wall cavities

Once you find the colony drilling into the wall or infested void and applying an insecticidal dust directly into the colony usually takes care of the problem.

Carpenter ant control is one of the harder things we do.  Most people think they’re hiring an exterminator to kill their carpenter ants, but their not. They’re hiring us to find them.  Learning how to kill carpenter ants can be rewarding, but it’s not easy
