Mouse Exterminator

A mouse exterminator for your home is a pretty common thing to need in the months from September to March.  The reason is that mice are desperate to take advantage of the warmer temperatures within your home. All living things need food, water and shelter.  In the absence of one of the three any living thing will cease to exist, including a mouse.

Mice are so common that we thought it would be good if you, as a consumer knew what to expect from a typical CT mouse exterminator.  Keep in mind that much like other contractors not all mouse exterminators are created equal.  We hope this helps you make a decision on who’s best suited to service your home.

Identification:  This may seem obvious, but trust me it’s not.  We receive many calls on a regular basis from homeowners who are unsure what they have.  Most often this sounds reasonable as who else, but a CT mouse exterminator is going to be able to tell the difference between bat guano and mouse droppings.  We also often get calls from folks that will say I have rats.  Unfortunately, they meant mice, but they said rats.  Rat work is more involved, more expensive and rats tend to be more difficult to control.  Any mouse exterminator should be able to tell you what you’re dealing with BEFORE they start the job.  Most often you’ll get a price over the phone and a service person will confirm the presence of mice before starting the job.  That’s common and ok.

Sanitation:  A good CT mouse exterminator will give you ideas about what may be keeping the mice in your home.  For instance, are you leaving pet food out all night or maybe you’re not picking up bird seed that’s spilled in the garage?  Usually it’s simple changes, but keep in mind mice are common and it doesn’t mean your home is dirty.

Exclusion:  Where are the mice getting in?  Finding all the areas is easier said than done.  However, some of the most common areas are caused by leaving a garage open all night, gaps in Bilco basement doors, penetrations for utilities into the basement, worn weather stripping at the garage or maybe mice are using the brick at your chimney to climb directly into your attic.  In any event a mouse exterminator can recommend repairs or use copper mesh to easily plug holes.

Trapping: Trapping is the hallmark of any pest management program.  The reason is that mice are curious and will readily examine new things within 10 ft of their home environment.  A good mouse exterminator will use lots of traps in many locations.  A lot of traps increases the opportunity to catch a mouse and immediately decreases the number of mice in your home.  It’s not unusual to have an average 2000 sq ft home take anywhere from 15-20 traps; as for what bait to use.  If there are no peanut allergies in the home peanut better is the best bait, bar none.

Baiting:  Using poison bait is a necessary evil in many mouse infested homes, but lets dispel a rumor right now.  When a mouse feeds on a poison bait, IT DOES NOT GO OUTSIDE TO DIE!!! Sorry folks, that’s not how it works.  The mouse will consume the bait and die 3-5 days later.  The mouse will die where it dies.  Now, I know what you’re thinking.  Your home is going to stink.  However, from experience I can tell you this is not always the case, but I’d be lying if I said it couldn’t happen.  With that said baits are used safely in 1000’s of homes everyday with no odor.

Last……………………..

Rodent Repellents:  I wasn’t a big believer in these products, but my mind has changed and I now feel they have their place.  Are they going to keep every mouse out?  No, but they do work on a limited basis.  We use them frequently as most are all natural and since they can do no harm; why not.  It’s just another tool a good CT mouse exterminator can use in the ongoing battle against pesky rodents.

Good luck
