How to Get Rid of Skunks in Connecticut

What’s that smell?

We’ve all smelled a skunk and it’s not pleasant but have you ever wondered why it’s mostly at night?  The reason is that skunks are nocturnal.  This means that a healthy skunk will do most if not all of their food gathering at night.  Skunks are also omnivorous.  This means that they feed on both animal and plants foods.  However, they prefer to eat insects; especially insects in the juicy larva stage.

Why are skunks a problem?

Many people in CT that have skunks are surprised to hear that along with foxes and raccoons skunks are actually one of the greatest carriers of rabies in our area.  This disease can cause animals to do strange things but more importantly there’s no cure for rabies.  If left untreated, rabies is fatal 100% of the time.  For this reason it’s wise to have skunks dealt with by a company like Envirocare Pest Control and if you’ve had contact, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Skunk biology

Skunks prefer areas of human habitation, but will set up dens in forest clearings and fields.  A skunk den is made up of pilings of leaves and debris on top of the ground during the spring in summer, but during winter they create below ground dens.  These below ground dens can be dug by the skunk, but they prefer to inhabit a den already dug by a fox or woodchuck.  It’s here in these below ground dens that the female has her 4-5 young and weans them to maturity.

How to Get Rid of Skunks in Connecticut!

When skunks are too close to your house and causing a danger to your family, they’ve got to go.

The main method of capture is with live traps.  This should only be done by a professional as once they’re trapped in a confined area skunks can become aggressive and spray.  You’ll know when a skunk is going to spray as they’ll usually turn around and spray as you approach.   The powerful glands used to spray are located at the base of their tail.  If the tail goes up, run!!!!!!  Skunks also will stamp their feet and growl to warn off trouble but don’t count on it.

After capturing a skunk a professional will be able to decide the best final destination for the animal.   The most humane option is to remove the animal from the property and euthanize it so it won’t become another homeowner’s issue.

It is important to note that in the State of Connecticut there are only two choices for the final disposition of skunk, fox, and raccoon: release on site or euthanize. Choose wisely.
